Funky Find

With Youtube’s algorithm, it can be hard to find new or unpopular content. Often times, unless you are continually filtering the results in creative ways, you can get trapped in a loop of the same content.

That’s no fun.

As an aspiring musician, I am always astounded when I come across new sounds, combinations, or musician collaborations. Today, that is just what I found.

Cy Leo, Mateus Asato, Kinga Glyk, & 60 Seconds of Funk

A quick distinction: Mateus Asato is on Guitar, Kinga Glyk is on Bass, and the star of the show, Cy Leo, is on Harmonica.

One of the greatest inspirations for musicians is other musicians. That’s why we see such crazy music coming from creatives such as these. All three of them are well-known in their corners of the music world, and to bring them together for a collaboration such as this is jaw dropping.

I have to say one of my favorite parts of watching musicians play is how into their groove they get. Cy Leo is a little melodramatic and I love it! And he never gets drowned out thanks to the microphone.

Finding such an upbeat and filled out groove was the highlight of my afternoon. The worst part of my whole day was reaching the end of the short 60 seconds of these dedicated Professional Musicians’ session.

Cy Leo & His Harp

Cy Leo, the obvious star in this short clip, has quite the record as a Solo Harmonicist. Not just once, but twice, he has been recognized as Solo World Champion at the World Harmonica Festival first in 2009 and then again in 2013. On top of that, he has over 15 International Awards for his incredible skill on the harmonica.

His talent in adjusting from one genre to another is uncanny. Here’s a video of Cy Leo Performing a soft piece titled “Moon River” accompanied by a piano. Even though it doesn’t hold the same punchiness that a Funk Song might, the passion is still so very present, along with an eloquent flow. Cy Leo’s Harmonica, the Super Chromatica, is the golden ticket to creating the wondrous sounds that he does. His Chromatic Harmonica is how he gets those in-between notes that patch together a unique flow in his particular style.

Cy Leo covers songs as well. Here’s the oh so very well known “Billie Jean” by Michael Jackson. This is by far his most popular video, and easily understood why that is. His cover, which he plays harmonica in place of the vocals, is an unparalleled take on the song that many have come to love and enjoy listening to. Though it is time-stamped by the feel and the instruments included, it will be a timeless song, sung & re-sung, covered & covered again for a long while.

Kinga Glyk & Mateus Asato

It would be easy enough to sneak away without mentioning the bandmates, but both Kinga and Mateus deserve some level of acknowledgement. They are, after all, astounding musicians!

Kinga Glyk is known for her incredibly playful and wildly funky songs, though she is not limited to just the two sounds. She plays everything from funk, to jazz, to covers of popular songs, like Eric Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven.”

She is one of the happiest musicians you will see on YouTube, and why shouldn’t she be? She’s in her early 20’s touring and playing bass! This young Polish bassist is certainly an encouragement to me as a musician.

As a Harmonica Player, you may be interested to know that she often has instrumental tracks on her YouTube Channel that may challenge your playing!

Mateus Asato is a Guitarist from Brazil who picked up the instrument before age ten, and the rest was history! His musical style creates environments. Watching him play truly is mesmerizing.
